NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060/2070 SUPER vs AMD Radeon RX 5700 / XT, comparative: the graphics card war has risen

For years AMD has been in the shadow of NVIDIA in the field of graphics cards. NVIDIA’s proposals have always gone ahead if what you were looking for was maximum performance and efficiency, and until recently AMD could hardly compete except in the most modest ranges.

Things have changed with the new AMD Radeon RX 5700 and Radeon RX 5700 XT , which have caused NVIDIA to react and launch its improved versions of the first RTX. We have been able to face the new GeForce RTX 2060/2070 SUPER with AMD graphics cards, and the results show that gamers finally have the most succulent alternatives in this range in which power and performance come together at very striking prices.

NVIDIA advances, but it is AMD that puts the batteries

We were already looking forward to a previous topic how the new AMD graphics do not compete (nor do they intend to compete) with the highest NVIDIA range . The RTX 2080 SUPER and especially the RTX 2080 Ti remain unattainable for the AMD graphics at the moment, but it is also true that the prices of these models are significantly higher.

So, the battle is in this ranta of 400-600 euros in which we will see different versions of the RTX 2060 SUPER, RTX 2070 SUPER, Radeon 5700 and Radeon 5700 XT of the different OEMs.

The benefits of these cards are really remarkable and leave behind the previous generations, and although in the case of NVIDIA the improvements are striking, it is in the graphics of AMD where there is a much more notable improvement over the RX 570/590 and also regarding the Vega 56/64.

Not only in power, care, but also in energy efficiency , a pending subject of the AMD graphics that has been corrected in the new 5700 / XT. The new RDNA architecture of the Navi 10 GPUs and its 7 nm lithographic process allows notable improvements in this section even if it does not yet reach the NVIDIA levels in this section.

Thus, we find an AMD that, as we will see, manages to exceed in price / performance the RTX 2060 and RTX 2070 that were presented last year, and which is also very competitive if we compare it with the new SUPER editions . How competitive? That is what we will clarify through the tests we have been able to run on these graphics cards.

Our tests

To evaluate these four graphics cards, we have had the reference test equipment of the latest analyzes, something that allows us to establish benchmarks with previous models of these manufacturers’ graphics and that makes it easier to know what we can expect from each card just by focusing on the GPU .

Thus, the processor is a Core i5-8400 , accompanied by 16 GB of 3200 MHz DDR4 memory mounted on an ASRock Z370M-ITX / ac board. The main storage unit is a Samsung 970 EVo M.2 NVMe, while the power supply is a 650W Be Quiet BN282.

We have used the latest NVIDIA and AMD drivers provided by the manufacturers in the days before the release of these graphics, and in both cases they are drivers that show room for improvement. Especially in the case of AMD, in which overclocking tasks were difficult to operate and presented erratic behavior.

For that reason and for lack of time we have focused on the native yields of these cards as they are offered to the user: time will have to analyze the performance if we do overclocking, but for the moment we will focus on the native options of these four cards that of course, they show the cards on the table in this price range in the case of AMD and NVIDIA.
