HP has become, without making too much noise, an example of how it is possible to innovate in a practical and surprising way. Models such as the recent Folio Specter prove it, but now they are back on track with a remarkable renovation of their HP Specter x360 convertible laptops.
In these new models there are striking hardware improvements such as the inclusion of the new Intel processors of the Whiskey Lake family or a battery that promises a range of 22.5 hours. However the surprise is in a new design for its edges and corners, in addition to that physical switch that allows to deactivate the webcam and protect our privacy.

Angles on the outside, frames on the inside
This angular design is the first thing that jumps into view in a model that makes the rear corners disappear to become corners “with chamfer” which in turn have a profile at an angle really striking.
Those small frames with this format not only mark that differential design, but that is where they have also placed the on-off button -theoretically to avoid accidental pulsations- and a USB-C connector. On the sides we find another USB-C port (both are Thunderbolt 3), a conventional USB-A, in addition to a Micro SD card reader in the 13-inch model and, in addition, an HDMI port in the 15-inch.
The interior design, yes, does not get infected at the moment of the screens without frames for which other manufacturers have bet. They are reduced in the lateral ones, yes, but as much in the part superior as especially in the inferior those frames are remarkable.
In both models we have those touch screens that we can also lower almost 360 degrees to make the laptop becomes a fully functional tablet.
New Whiskey Lake processors
The renewal of the equipment of the HP Specter x360 13 and 15 inches benefits from the new processors Intel quad-core (Core i5-8265U) and six-core (Core i7-8565U) of 8th generation respectively, something that contributes so much to the renewed power of these equipments as to another fundamental element: the autonomy of their batteries.
In fact HP promise a range of 22.5 hours (17.5 in the 15-inch model) that seems – as usual – overly optimistic. Even so, that figure suggests a particularly striking real autonomy, but we will have to verify that section in a specific analysis as soon as we have access to these new laptops.
In the new Specter x360 we also find up to 16 GB of RAM and up to 512 GB of storage in SSD M.2 NVMe, while the connectivity becomes interesting: not only have WiFi support 802.11ac or Bluetooth 5, but there is also models with LTE option thanks to the integration of an Intel eSIM module that provides that mobile connectivity.
In the 15-inch model we have another surprise: the jump to NVIDIA dedicated graphics cards instead of the previous AMD vega M. Thus, we have variants such as the basic, with a GeForce MX 150 and the micro quad-core of Intel, or a micro six-core with a GTX 1050 Ti Max Q.
Live the privacy
On the right side we find a second USB-C port and the headphone socket, but the most interesting part of that side is the small physical switch with which we activate and deactivate the webcam (which has Windows Hello support for facial recognition) by hardware .
This mechanism is even more effective than the caps that some manufacturers (HP included) have placed on some of their laptops in recent times, since it turns it off completely.
With this HP provides an important help to protect our privacy against the threat of RATs with which cyber attackers can take control of that webcam without us knowing.
To the webcam that allows access to that option of facial recognition is added a fingerprint sensor located to the right of the touchpad
