Samsung yesterday broke with the pair that we had seeing several generations of Galaxy S and extended this line up to four Galaxy S10. The move: add a supreme model, which in addition to the most powerful integrates the support to 5G (what looks like the bastion of the manufacturers this year), and one reduced or simpler. But is the Galaxy S10e a decompensated model compared to what the iPhone XR represents?
The parallelism between the plays is quite logical: in both cases it is a high-end mobile that maintains many features in common with its older brothers, but that on the way loose weight to be a more affordable and basic option. For the iPhone XR we talked about a candidate for best selling Apple seeing what the iPhone 8 supposed (totally contradicting our first cabals ). Could it be the S10e for Samsung or is it a more unbalanced light version ? Let’s see it in detail.
Samsung Galaxy S10e vs. Samsung Galaxy S10
Samsung explained yesterday during a presentation (which already began with the Samsung Galaxy Fold main dish , bareback and without preliminaries) that the Samsung Galaxy S10e is designed and manufactured for those who want the essential aspects (among the most demanding) in a jar small and a flat screen, no curves. This resulted in a cheaper terminal than its older brothers, the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10 + and the S10 5G , which also recovered the screen option without curves that the brand gave off the Galaxy S with the Galaxy S8 and goodbye to the surname Edge , until then what was used to differentiate the variant with curved screen of the standard.
But lower costs is not magic and, worth the redundancy, has its cost at the level of functions and capabilities: in the case of the Galaxy S10e with respect to the S10 the main differences or cuts are in the screen resolution, cameras and battery . Let’s see in detail that they imply those 150 euros of difference between one and another (at the moment).
Going by parts, the dimensions of the phones are different , and therefore their volume and final weight are. The 150 grams of the S10e comes from its 78.52 cubic centimeters, below the 82.31 cc of the S10, weighing this 157 grams, being thus a more compact and lighter smartphone but housing a smaller diagonal screen: 5.8 inches versus 6.1 inches.
Although talking about the screens, what can “worry” those who doubt between them is the resolution. The S10e is a Galaxy S that does not reach the QHD , something that does not happen from the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 remaining in FullHD +, but this does not have to be negative taking into account that many current range stops remain in this resolution, as the OnePlus 6T , the Huawei P20 Pro or the recently introduced Xiaomi Mi 9 , and that are 428 pixels per inch of density for the S10e, which is not too little either (the S10 screen has 550 pixels per inch).
Beyond the resolution, the technology is the same (both are Dynamic AMOLED and both have a hole in the screen to show the only front camera), but not the shape. As we have said, the smaller of the S10 has no curves on the side edges as it does with the curved screens of the more advanced, although taking into account that Samsung has not added a notable value to this beyond the aesthetic and a slight Personalization at the software level, perhaps that one we like more than another is a question more of tastes and not so much a lack.
With respect to the cameras, what the S10e loses by the way of saving is the telephoto lens , thus having a maximum optical zoom of 0.5x (and 8x digital) compared to 2x of the S10 (and 10x digital). The other two cameras are exactly the same, and in the absence of knowing if there are differences in the app it is possible to think that except this aspect of the zoom will be quite tied in photographic capacity.

Another difference (not the last) is the battery . At the moment we have to speculate from the only data of capacity, having a battery of 3,100 milliamps / hour in the S10e and one of 3,400 mAh in the S10, but by precedent with the Samsung Galaxy S9 + we know that 3,500 mAh may not be what is expected in a “large” and high-end mobile in the case of Samsung (the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 with 4,000 mAh also failed to meet expectations with 4,000 mAh), so this may be an Achilles heel more important.
Finally, the aesthetic is different and also the design and construction in some ways (the Gorilla Glass is different, for example), and this has its impact on the user-smartphone interaction. The screen side frames of the S10e are wider (as a consequence of not having the curves), achieving according to GSM Arena a lesser use of the front by the screen (83.3% of the S10e versus 88.3% for the S10) , but more remarkable is the change of a system of reading of tracks to another one because, whereas the S10e integrates it in the lateral one (being a standard optical reader) like the Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) , to the S10 it has arrived the evolution of the ultrasonic reader on the screen.
Aesthetically it happens as in the case of the previous ones; here we talk about notch and the two iPhones present that great notch that still manages to be characteristic, but the screen frames of the iPhone XR are larger . And yet, the use of the front by the screen is greater in the iPhone XS (82.9%, according to GSM Arena ) compared to the iPhone XR (79%).

Something else changes in a matter of screens and that directly affects the user-interface interaction, being something that is directly a lack and not a variable that depends on our eye or the case: in the iPhone XR there is no 3D Touch . It is clear that missing or not depends on whether we are used to them, but in itself it is a difference with respect to something that the iPhone XS does and the XR does not.
On the other hand, the screen of greater diagonal in the iPhone XR favors that there is a greater surface and, therefore, a greater volume (and weight). Apple has placed the 5.8 inches where before it placed 4.6 inches and notorious frames, and the iPhone XS has a volume of 78.4 cubic centimeters and a weight of 177 grams, while the iPhone XR rises to 194 grams for 94.82 square centimeters.
